5 things I miss from my childhood...

Ok, I'm SO lame--Melissa tagged me like FOREVER ago, and I'm just now writing this??? yuk.
1. Camp Winacka. From 2nd grade until like 11th grade, I went away to girl scout camp every summer. Sometimes 2 times a summer. In 2nd grade, I went to Camp Davidson, which was the Brownie camp. After that, I went to Camp Winacka every summer. It was up near Julian, Ca (like an hour from San Diego), and it was amazing. I remember being on the bus ride up and once we passed by Dudley's Bakery, I knew it wasn't far. The counselors were always SO cool. I'd always be excited to see who I'd remember from the year before. They always used camp names, and we would go INSANE trying to figure out what their "real" names were. We sang the CRAZIEST songs ever. When I first started going, I remember canoeing on the lake, and we ALWAYS got to do the ropes course. Parts of the camp were destroyed in the Cedar fire in 2003. I'm pretty sure that the equestrian facility was one of the places destroyed. It was so sad to hear that the camp had been affected by the fire, because it was such a major part of my childhood.
2. My great grandparents. My mom's grandparents were really my only relatives that lived close to us when I was growing up. They were about 25 minutes away, and we spent SO much time with them. When I was in elementary school and would get sick during the day, they were always the ones to come pick me up and take care of me. My grandmother always had those red and white starlight mints in her purse, and she'd give me one as soon as we got to the car. My grandfather had been a short order cook for YEARS, and used to make me American fried potatoes that I would SMOTHER in ketchup. My grandmother passed away when I was in eighth grade, and my grandfather was never really the same. When we moved to Oregon, we bought a house with a little house on the property, and he lived there until he couldn't take care of himself anymore. My first car was the car that he and my grandmother bought brand new the year I was born (a 1976 Ford Granada the color of banana cream pie).
3. The swing set in my back yard. When I was in preschool, my dad and I would swing every evening that the weather was good. Since we lived in San Diego then, that was pretty much every day. I would tell him about my day, and then I'd teach him the songs that we learned. I remember being so little, and feeling like my swingset was as big as the one at the park. I remember feeling like I was the most important thing in my dad's life, and there was nothing else I'd have to compete with for his attention at that time of day. Later, when my parents got divorced and we'd have our weekends together, he had so much going on in his life that we never REALLY spent quality time. But on the swingset? Nothing else exsisted.
4. My grandparents' backyard. My dad's parents, when I was young, lived in Mira Loma, up north of San Diego. They lived in a neighboorhood, but had a HUGE backyard. They always had a FRILLION animals-rabbits, sheep, chickens, probably horses at some point, and geese. Those geese were MEAN suckers, too. Whenever I wanted to get to the henhouse to collect eggs, I'd sprint from the door to the gate. I was so afraid of those damn geese. My grandpa would set me up in the grass with a couple of rabbits, and he'd put a circle of chickenwire around me so I could hang out without the geese being able to get to me. About a half a block away was a really cool park with a horse arena, and there would be 4H events sometimes when I was visiting. I loved watching the kids riding their horses in the ring. I remember it was always SO dusty at their house, but there were always a million things to do there.
5. Tap shoes. I took a few tap classes when I was a little girl, and boy did I love those shiny tap shoes. I loved the ribbon tie, I loved wearing them with tights and a leotard, and I LOVED making a huge clatter with my tap shoes. I always wanted to learn how to do double wings. Maybe I should. I'm probably not too old, right??

Well, since I am TOTALLY lame and only know one blogger, I'm going to have to tag Liz (once I figure out how...)
